John Laurie is a photographer with a diverse portfolio who has worked around the world with a wide range of clients, from food to people and everything in between. He is a photographer who strives to capture the authentic and the everyday, seeking to honour and glorify the ordinary, often-overlooked moments.
John craves those seconds that happen in-between; the unwitting smile, the half-eaten dessert. His work is characterised by his ability to create a strong sense of place and environment: he wants to put you there, at that point in time. He works quickly, responsively, and collaboratively with a relaxed, easy-going, yet professional approach.
John has carved out a niche working with food, beverages, and lifestyle photography, though he is in no way constrained to those subjects: one look at his portfolio makes clear his ability to work far more broadly, finding the essence of locations from Cambodia to Hamburg. John’s natural instinct for story offers a strong ability to capture bodies of work with a strong narrative. His keen eye for the intriguing and respect for the everyday moment sets him apart, and sees people returning to him time and again.
John has been a finalist in the Art Gallery of NSW’s Photographic Portraiture Prize and the Adventure Handbook Photo Prize, and was shortlisted for the Head On Portraiture Prize. His first solo photography exhibition was at JCP Studios in Melbourne, where he showed The Light of the Day in 2016.
